Meet Chef Purvill Chaney


Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, Chef Purvill Chaney got his first taste of the culinary arts working as a Chef in his parents’ restaurants.  Quickly discovering his passion, he ventured to Baltimore, MD to attend college at Morgan State University.  Upon graduation he returned to Michigan and began his hospitality career as a Sous Chef with the Hyatt Regency.  Spending over 27 years with Hyatt at twelve different locations in multiple cities, Chef Chaney joined the Spectra team at the Duke Energy Convention Center in 2007.


A constant professional, leading a staff that numbers over 100 at any given time, Chef Chaney loves interacting with guests, both internal and external, and has had the privilege of cooking and being in the presence of many celebrities and dignitaries such as Oprah Winfrey, Presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton, the Dali Lama, and the NFL Commissioner during the Super Bowl to name a few.


An award-winning Ice Sculptor, Chef Chaney never shies away from a challenge.  Whether he is creating menus and overseeing mass production to serve over 120,000 meals for the World Choir Games, or adapting menus to accommodate the many dietary needs of guests, Chef Chaney is proud of his ability to customize and deliver one of a kind experiences during tradeshows, conventions, meetings, and events of all types.


In addition to training up and coming talent, Chef Chaney also takes pride in the community; focusing on sustainability efforts locally and promoting the events industry to a diverse population. Through his annual work with Frederick Douglass Elementary and their garden club, Chef and his team welcome 30-40 students from Cincinnati Public Schools to his state-of-the-art kitchen at the DECC.  During this hands on training the students learn how to prepare and cook the vegetables from their garden to help create a nutritious meal. He’s also been known to pop up around town to give back.


His ability to think outside the box, coupled with his extensive experience with various cuisines, allows him to produce cutting edge presentations and ahead of trend ideas for each event.  These are the qualities that differentiate Chef from others in the field and makes each event unique.  As Chef Chaney says, he never works a day in his life because he loves what he does each and every day.
